The annual Choitz-Schwerdtfeger Round-up was Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at Rancho Milagro, east of Ellsworth. Diana (Schwerdtfeger) and Jesse Magana and their family hosted 90 relatives and friends in the convention room.
Descendants of Fredrich A. and Wilhelmina (Hackbarth) Schwerdtfeger and descendants of Hermann and Augusta (Neumann) Choitz gathered for a potluck lunch at noon; the afternoon was spent visiting and reminiscing.
Fredrich and Wilhelmina Schwerdtfeger were both immigrants from Germany with their families both settling in Illinois. They met there and were married in Whiteside. They had four children before coming to Kansas circa 1877: Ida (married to Reinhold Haase), Mathilda (married to Otto Choitz), Herman (married to Louise Nienke), and Albert (married to Lydia Choitz). Eight more children were born in Sherman Township, Ellsworth County: Helena (married to Wm. C. Choitz), Fredrich, Bertha, Frank (married to Bertha Grosnick), Ernest (married to Maude Jessup), Carl, Ulricka (married to Fred Choitz), and Hermina (married to William Stroede).
Hermann Choitz and Augusta (Neumann) were also immigrants from Germany with both families settling in the Chicago, Ill., area. Hermann came to America when he was 12 and migrated to Kansas in 1877. A year later he brought his wife to Kansas, settling in Sherman township. They lived there until her death in 1931. They had seven children: Martha, Wilhelm (Wm. C., married to Helen Schwerdtfeger); Karl; Frederich (married to Ulricka Choitz); Lydia (married to Albert Schwerdtfeger); Ernest and Ella.
Lillian Koralek Campbell was the oldest person present. She is the youngest child of Wm. C. and Helena Choitz. Others attending from that branch of the family tree were Linda and Clint Epley, Canyon Lake, Texas; Richard Choitz and John, Lisa Choitz and friend Dale Webster, Derby; Jamie Choitz, Ryan Hageman, and Jessica Ochampaugh, Plainville: Justin and Amy Choitz, Mason and Morgan, Hays; Caryle and Dan Carr, Leavenworth; Tina and Mark Sayler, Hutchinson; Pat Teach, Maize; Melissa and Randy Schneider and Levi, Kanopolis; Lonnie Soukup, Jacque Toman, Carol Hicks, and Ona Wright, Ellsworth.
Representing the Ida and Reinhold Haase family was Jim and Marilyn Homolka, Maxine and John Prewett, Lincoln, Carol and Ralph Frazee, Garden City, Alan and Connie Falk, Brian Falk, Darlene Slechta, Mike and Betty Slechta, Edith and Rene’ Pennington, JoAnna Lago, Kevin and Ryan Johnston, friend Allison Reinhart, all of Ellsworth, were from the Herman and Louise Schwerdtfeger family.
Walter Schwerdtfeger Jr. and Kim Svoboda of Ellsworth are descendants of Albert and Lydia Schwerdtfeger.
Additional hosts were Famia Magana, Spring Branch, Texas; Clay and Terry Magana, Maize; and Velinda Magana, Salina. Others from the family of Frank and Bertha Schwerdtfeger attending were Ginny and Danny Hughes, Salina; Dan and Sharla Fouquet, Cheney; Connie and Karl Newkirk, Emporia; Linda and Roger Pollock, Elgin, Ill.; Barbara and Bob Kipler, Springfield, Mo.; Bertha Rojas, Kanopolis; Delvin and Jeanne Haase, Shane Haase, Logan and Ethan, Arrin and Kristin Haase, Jenna, Nicole, and Karlie, all of Ellsworth.
Other cousins attending were Harold Choitz, Rochester, Mich. (Friedrich F. A. and Helene Pflughoeft Choitz family), Erwin and Verla Choitz, Hutchinson; Leon Choitz, Lincoln (Carl F.A. and Emilie Schultz family), Harry Choitz, Miranda St. Clair, Lawrence and Irma Choitz, Carl E. Choitz, Dean Choitz, Ethan and Blair, Ellsworth; and Sharon Muehleissen, Ellinwood (Carl and Augusta Schieve Choitz family). Willis and Fern Schultz, Ellsworth, represented the Heinrich and Louisa Choitz Schultz family.
