What is truth and how is it found?

POSTED: February 3, 2012 7:00 a.m.

Have you ever asked the question, “What is truth?”  One can watch politicians on television today and wonder if anyone tells the truth anymore. It seems that even children today have lost the concept of telling the truth.  So, that bodes the question for this essay, “What is truth?”
Many believe that this is a problem for the 21st century, but this is not a new problem. The Bible records for us the first time that truth was challenged was in the Garden of Eden.
Adam and Eve were living in direct communion with God. Daily, God would come and visit with Adam and Eve until one day Lucifer came along to them and began to challenge God’s Word. (Genesis chapter 3.)
Lucifer challenged the authority of God, and convinced Eve and then Adam to partake of the forbidden tree. This began a problem in man that exists even today! Man now has the potential to follow through with either good actions or evil actions.  With all the disinformation today due to the sin of Adam and Eve in the garden, then how does one find out what truth is?
If you want to know the most factual evidence that something is true, then you must strive to get to the original source. While this is impossible in the case of Adam and Eve, it is completely possible with God. If one wants to know truth, then you must go to the Bible and know what God’s Word says.
When it comes to truth, God is very clear on what he means. The King James Bible has 224 verses that use the word truth. Psalm 100:5 tells us that it is possible for us to know truth in our generation, for it states: “… his truth endureth to all generations.” John 4:6 states, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
These two verses indicate that not only is truth attainable today, but it is not found in a situation but in a person. Jesus is truth. His Word (the Bible) is truth.
The Bible is also clear when it comes to lying.  John 8:44 quotes Jesus Christ as stating, “Ye are of your father the devil … He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him … he is a liar, and the father of it.”
So, one can deduce from just these three verses that God, His Son, and His Word are truth, and Satan (the one who caused Adam and Eve to die as a result of sin) is the father of lies.
If this is true, then what spirit are the politicians, children, and yes, even ourselves, using when we lie?
It is the same spirit that caused Adam and Eve to be forced out of the Garden of Eden.
It is the spirit of this world. If we want to know truth, we must know God. Know God, know truth!
How does one know God? That is easy. One does not have to go to a man to know or talk with God. We have access to God through the Holy Spirit. John 14:16-17 states: “I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”
The Holy Spirit of God indwells believers today! He and His truth reside in those who have placed their faith in God.
If you have never trusted God for your salvation, then get in His Word and see the truth for yourself. Romans 10:17 states, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Listen to God, not man! Get back to the original source.
May the Lord bless your search.
