Jack Zvolanek will celebrate 85th birthday

Jack Zvolanek of Ellsworth will celebrate his 85th birthday Monday, Feb. 13. He was born in Ellsworth and raised on a farm near Black Wolf.
He attended South Excelsior country school and Ellsworth High School. In 1944, at age 17, he and several classmates joined the U.S. Navy to serve in World War II. Jack sailed on the USS Collingsworth, a troop carrier, in the Pacific Theater of war. He returned to Ellsworth in 1946 and resumed his high school education to get his diploma.
He married Pauline Marcotte April 17, 1948, in Ellsworth. They will celebrate their 64th wedding anniversary next month. The couple has five children: John and wife, Berta, of Lincoln, Calif., Connie Graf and husband, Lynn, of Buckingham, Ill., Teresa Secord and husband, Dave, of Galva, Neal and wife, Tina, of Abilene, and Jim of Kanopolis. They also have 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Jack retired in 1985 from S.W. Bell Telephone Co. after 39 years, 37 of those in Abilene. He hobbies include fishing, hunting, golf and lapidary art.
