Fire burns boats at Wilson Lake

Several boats were damaged Monday afternoon, during a fire at the Lake Wilson Marina. According to Willis Ohl, Wilson State Park manager, a boat caught fire in the slip at the marina about 4:30 p.m. Several other boats also damaged in the fire, as was the marina itself. There were no deaths nor injuries reported. The cause of the fire is unknown. Ohl said an official from the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s office in Topeka will be at the lake Tuesday to investigate. Firefighters from Russell, Wilson and Dorrance responded to the fire. Larry Langerman, Wilson fire chief, said his crews extinguished two burning boats.

On May 7, 2012 at 4:39 pm Russell County 911 received a call of an explosion and fire at the Marina at Lake Wilson. The following units were paged to respond. Russell County Sheriff’s Office, Russell County EMS, Kansas Dept. of Wild Life and Parks, Russell City Fire Rescue, Dorrance Fire Dept., Kansas Highway Patrol, Lucas Fire Dept. and Sylvan Grove Fire Dept. The fire was located on one of the docks where boats are stored. The fire was contained to five boat slips with the total loss of at least two boats with other boats damaged. The Kansas State Fire Marshals were contacted and are responding. Kansas Department of Wild Life and Parks will be the lead agency in the investigation. There were no injuries reported due to the fire or explosion. The incident is still under investigation.
