RUSSELL --- The Lady Oilers -- ranked fifth in the state in 2A play by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association -- grabbed an early lead and never relinquished it, upsetting the fourth-ranked 2A Lady Cardinals of Ell-Saline by a score of 59-50 in the Amos Morris Basketball Tournament in Russell.

Although the Lady Cards narrowed the lead to one point late, good defensive play by Lady O guards Janae Hekele, Reagan Phelan, Katie Hipp and Breanna Holmes forced a lot of turnovers that Central Plains turned into points. It was an exciting game of early season basketball.

The Oilers defeated the Ell-Saline boys by a score of 47-30, buoyed by the offensive play of Layne Beiberle, Breaden Crites, Michael Ryan and the defensive rebounding of “Big Joe” Barton.

Good defensive play was the key to the win. The Oilers never let up on the pressure, although the 3-ball shooting of the Cardinals brought them within three points at least twice in the fourth quarter.

TESCOTT --- The Dragons put one in the win column as they whipped Southern Cloud County by a score of 70-50 in the Tescott Basketball Tournament in Tescott.

Floor leader and team spark plug Cole “Zook” Zelenka scored a whopping 27 points in the win.

The top-ranked 1A Division II Lady Dragons steamrolled over the Lady Warriors 64-32, with Karlie Steinle, Shania Steinike, Tanisha Steinike and Dreamer Roberson all in double-digits.

Christmas came early for the Lady Dragons, as Antjelica Pfannensteil returned to the hardwood following a broken finger that threatened to keep her on the injured-reserve list until after the Christmas break.
