Tales of woe from the hardwood

It has been a long time since all Ellsworth County basketball teams suffered defeats on the same day during the mid-winter tournaments, but Friday was not good for the local teams.

HOISINGTON --- The Lady ‘Cats of Ellsworth jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter but shots beyond the arc and almost perfect Ffree throw shooting gave undefeated Russell the lead by the end of the period.

The Lady Broncos won by a score of 52-37, making a lot of 3-balls in the game.

The Lady ‘Cats will play for third place at 3 p.m. (not 4:45 as previously printed on brackets) in Russell against Victoria.

The Bearcats were in the entire game against LaCrosse Thursday night, but lost by a score of 61-41. They will meet Russell at 1:15 p.m. at Hoisington High School in the game for seventh place.

LINCOLN --- The Lady Longhorns of Thunder Ridge upset the Lady Dragons of Wilson 46-33 -- the second consecutive loss and upset for the previously un-beaten team in a week.

Wilson had its’ lowest scoring quarter in five years in the fourth quarter of the loss.

The Dragons also lost to Thunder Ridge by a score of 52-41.

Both Wilson teams placed fourth in the Northern Plains League Tournament.

ST. JOHN --- The top-ranked 1A Division I Tigers of St. John defeated the Central Plains Oilers 55-40 in St. John in the second meeting of the Central Prairie League teams this season at the Mid-Winter Tournament in St. John.

The Oilers will play Pratt for third place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in St. John.
