Wendell Truhlar

POSTED: January 6, 2014 7:00 a.m.

Wendell Dean Truhlar, 75, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, in Ellsworth, Kan., surrounded by his wife and children. He was born March 27, 1938, to Steve and Dorothy (Shelkett) Truhlar, in Ellsworth, and was a life-long Ellsworth resident.
On Dec. 10, 1960, Wendell married Shirley (Hochman) Truhlar, at the First Presbyterian Church in Salina, Kan., during a blizzard so intense the photographer assumed the wedding would be rescheduled and didn’t bother coming! She survives him, as do their two children; daughter, Sherry Truhlar of Alex-andria, Va., and son, Dr. Scott Truhlar, and wife, Ruth, of Iowa City, Iowa.
Wendell proudly served the USA, creatively underreporting his age to enlist in the Kansas National Guard while in high school. His term was an atypical eight years, nine months and 27 days — extended in response to the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Wendell was an imaginative builder and relentless “doer.” Until COPD limited his activities, he was in perpetual motion. He proudly spoke of the many structures he helped build during 27 years at Truhlar’s Ready-Mix Concrete. His formidable work ethic led him to (depending on the decade) weld art, run wine tastings, refinish antique trunks, teach 4-H woodworking and electrical projects, lead Boy Scout campouts in the dead of winter, supervise maintenance at the Good Samaritan Center, and remodel rental homes. Friends and relatives remember him for his mischievous spirit and ornery smile, which led to amusing family outings and fun work relationships. Even in his final months of life, these attributes were undiminished, winning over the hearts of his caretakers.
There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Interment and a private celebration of life will take place later. Those wishing to honor his memory are encouraged to donate a memorial to the Ellsworth Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Parsons Funeral Home, P.O. Box 45, Ellsworth, Kan. 67439.
