HAYS --- The Lady Bulldogs of Golden Plains (21-3) beat Wilson by a score of 57-37 Thursday in the first round of the 1A Division II State basketball tournament in Hays.

Bad luck befell the Lady Dragons in the first quarter, as McKenzie Thrasher --- a key player for the squad on both sides of the ball --- twisted her ankle in a pile-up during a defensive rebound and was lost for the duration of the game.

The hoops were also unkind to the Lady Dragons, as the balls seemed to bounce off the rim instead of falling into the hole all night, especially in the third quarter.

The Lady Dragons finished a successful season with back-to-back State tournament berths and a record of 17-7.

The best game of the first round was the Bucklin versus St. John’s of Beloit/Tipton contest, where the Lady Blujays were down 17 points by the second minute mark of the second quarter and fought back to tie the game, sending it into overtime. Bucklin won the game in the overtime period, 56-49, and will meet Golden Plains in the next round.

It wasn’t a pretty game of basketball, but it was exciting.

Number one seed Baileyville B&B, in their final season as school, overwhelmed Attica 51-35. Argonia fought Dighton in the first half, but the Lady Hornets are a fast and physical team and owned the second half to win by a score of 47-35.
