Ellsworth residents woke up Thursday morning to rain, wind gusts of up to 72 miles an hour and damage across the city.
For the second time this year, golfers and city officials gathered at the Ellsworth Municipal Golf Course to examine the damage to golf cart sheds behind a new building that was finished a few weeks ago. The shed the new building replaced was blown away several months ago by strong winds.
“The debris went a lot farther this time and I don’t think we had any golf carts damaged the last time,” city administrator Tim Vandall said.
Across town, all shapes and sizes of tree limbs could be seen in yards and in the streets. Fences also took a beating.
At 2nd and Kansas streets, a shed was lifted off its foundation, blew through a fence and landed in the yard of the Farm Bureau office.
Electricity also was an issue.
At one point during the morning, the WaKeeney-based Western Cooperative Electric had customers in Ellsworth, Kanopolis, Wilson, Dorrance, Bunker Hill and Sylvan Grove without power. All but the northwest corner of Ellsworth and Lorraine remained dark after 9 a.m.
A cooperative spokesman said three or four poles in the Ellsworth territory, which stretches to the west, were snapped off during the storm.
Rain filled ditches. One report put Thursday’s downpour at 2 inches in Ellsworth.
The storm postponed several events, including the Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter’s annual hot dog feed and photo event Sunday, June 8, for Ellsworth Recreation Department ball teams. The event is staged in Preisker Park, which looked like a war zone Thursday morning. The hot dog feed will be rescheduled.
