When Debbie Garrett of Ellsworth began her duties as the new nurse for the USD 327 school district Aug. 14, she did so for two reasons — the community and the kids.
“I am very exited about this fabulous opportunity to serve our community, to get to know all the kids, and to just be a great advocate for them,” she said.
When she talks about the students, Garrett immediately beings to smile.
“They’re adorable,” she said. “I have met quite a few of them, and they are just as cute as they can be. They all look like their parents take very good care of them.”
A registered nurse for the past 25 years, Garrett has been an Ellsworth resident for 14 years. Prior to becoming the USD 327 district nurse, she worked for 14 years as a nurse in the emergency room at Salina Regional Health Center.
“I’ve been driving to Salina for the past 14 years, and I was ready to become involved in our community and to be with our kids,” she said.
Garrett said the start of the school year has kept her quite busy.
“There is just so much to make sure that is taken care of with all the children,” she said. “This includes immunizations, meal modifications and things like that.”
Garrett earned an Associates of Science degree in nursing from Butte College in Oroville, Calif.
Garrett said it will be a challenge to provide health care for students at the district’s three schools.
“I don’t think I have a set schedule at this point,” she said. “Right now, I’m just trying to get everybody in the system and make sure all the kids have what they need.”
Garrett succeeds Janese Base, who retired at the end of June after 25 years as the district nurse.
“I’m sure Mrs. Base will be sorely missed,” Garrett said. “She has been a valuable asset and a great advocate to come in and help me take over. She has been very available during the transition.”
