The Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo School District stands to gain $320,000 in state aid under a plan proposed this past week by Gov. Sam Brownback, superintendent Eric Reid said Monday.
But the news is not all good for Ellsworth, if school board members decide to ask voters to approve a bond issue to build a gymnasium and make other improvements to district schools. Several options are on the table and Reid has promised to provide more when the board meets again in January.
If board members decide to take a bond issue to voters and it is approved, the state would reimburse the district 30 percent under current law.
Brownback’s plan would eliminate state participation in local bond issues and could make the change retroactive to Jan. 1, 2012, instead of taking effect July 1, when most new laws go on the books, Reid said. If the Kansas Legislature agrees to the Brownback plan, the Ellsworth district would not have time to complete the bond issue process and be eligible for state aid.
