The Wilson Fire Department was called to help Russell County firefighters extinguish a pasture fire about one and a half miles east and one and a half miles south of Dorrance at about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday. Due to the ultra-dry conditions and strong winds, the dangerous fire quickly raged out of control and spread north towards Old 40 highway. Units of the Ellsworth, Sylvan Grove, Kanopolis and Holyrood fire departments also responded to the call to extinguish the fire.

Ellsworth County is currently under a fire ban which includes fireworks and campfires. Residents are urged to take every conceivable fire-prevention measure in their daily activities. Wild fires are extremely dangerous and have the ability to expand exponentially, creating life-threatening situations quickly.

Wilson will hold a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 28, at city hall to discuss fireworks due to the tinder-dry conditions.
