Fort Harker Days schedule

A youngster enjoys Friday night activities during the 2013 Fort Harker Days. There's always plenty to do and see.

The following is the Fort Harker Days schedule of events:
Friday, July 11
• 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. — Forsyth Scout Reunion. Participants are asked to sign in with the quartermaster at the Fort Harker Junior Officer Quarters.
• 5 p.m. — Sand Volleyball Tournament, Kanopolis City Park. Limited to the first 16 teams. Four team slots remain available. To sign up, call Jenny Thornton, (785) 531-0396.
• 5 to 7 p.m. — Hamburger Feed at the Fort Harker Commanding Officer’s Quarters. Sponsored by the Ellsworth County Historical Society. A donation of $6 per plate is requested. The menu consists of a hamburger, baked beans, chips, a drink and dessert.
• 6 p.m. — “Remember When” picture display and old quilts at the commanding officer’s quarters.
• 7 p.m. — “The Cowboy” Jim Gray gives an in-depth look at the life of Chauncey Beldon Whitney, frontier defender, in front of the Fort Harker Junior Officer’s Quarters.
• 7 p.m. — The band, “Limousine Frogs” performs on the slab at Kanopolis City Park.
Saturday, July 12
(All events conducted at Kanopolis City Park unless otherwise noted. Bring your own lawn chairs.)
• All Day — Food vendors in Kanopolis City Park.
• 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. — Fort Harker Run/Walk registration, A and Kansas Streets. For more information, call Pete Orozco, (785) 472-4567 or email
• 7:30 a.m. — For Harker four mile run and two mile walk/run, A and Kansas Streets.
• 8 a.m. — Sand volleyball.
• 8:30 a.m. — Live music by Weston Price prior to the parade in front of Orozco’s Portales.
• 9 a.m. — Free sno cones and balloons in front of the Kanopolis City Library.
• 9 a.m. — Parade lineup at the corner of First Street and Kansas Avenue. To enter or for more information, call the Kanopolis City Office, (785) 472-4732.
• 10 a.m. — Parade, with Pete and Bonnie Orozco as grand marshals. The theme for the parade is “Running Through the Years” in honor of the Orozcos. Immediately following the parade, a ping pong ball drop will be conducted at the corner of Kansas and Ohio Streets.
• 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. — “Remember When” picture display and old quilts at the Fort Harker Commanding Officer’s Quarters.
• 11 a.m. — Lego Contest signup at the Kanopolis City Library.
• 11 a.m. — Face painting by DD Clown and Company in the community room at the Kanopolis City Library.
• 11:30 a.m. — Turtle Races. Box turtles only.
• Noon — Bounceroo wet water slide. Prepare to get wet.
• Noon — Free watermelon in Kanopolis City Park.
• 1 p.m. — LEGO contest at the Kanopolis City Library.
• 1:30 p.m. — Pinata fun north of the Kanopolis City Library.
• 4 p.m. — Kanopolis All-School Social Hour at the Kanopolis Community Center.
• 5 p.m. — Kanopolis All School Banquet.
• 6 to 8 p.m. — Entertainment by Dave Pickering, the one man band.
• 6 p.m. — Registration for the adult (ages 18 and older) covered wagon races and kids covered wagon races with parent’s approval.
 • 7 p.m. — Covered wagon races at North Kansas Street by the Kanopolis City Park. Wagons will be provided.
• 8 p.m. — Kanopolis Fire Department gun raffle.
• 8:15 p.m. — Kanopolis Volunteer of the Year Award.
• 8 p.m. to midnight — Free Dance to Complete Music, Matt McCasland, disc jockey.
