About 100 residents of Ellsworth County and beyond gathered Tuesday morning at the Ellsworth Steak House to meet retired U.S. Sen. Bob Dole and thank him for his years of service.

It was standing room only as the 90-year-old Dole demonstrated the dry wit for which he is known. When the speaker failed, he quipped, "If it's not working, I had nothing to do with it."

Dole, who used this trip as a reason to spend time in his hometown of Russell, was accompanied by his daughter, Robin. The senator said his wife would have been with them, but she was representing the family at the funeral of Howard Baker, a long-time senator who is married to Nancy Landon Kassebaum. Both Baker and Kassebaum served in the U.S. Senate with Dole.
