Ellsworth County mostly follows state voters

POSTED: August 5, 2014 7:00 a.m.

Almost a fourth of Ellsworth County's 4,076 registered votes went to the polls Tuesday in a primary election that offered little for Democrats, but contained at least one surprise for Republicans.

With 25 of 25 precincts counted, First District congressman Tim Huelskamp, a Fowler Republican, trailed political newcomer Alan LaPolice, Clyde, 381 to 408. That vote total was in opposition to the overall state tally, where Huelskamp claimed 54 percent of the votes with 306 of 1,338 precincts reporting, according to the Kansas Secretary of State's website.

On the Democratic side, James E. Sherow, former Manhattan mayor, received 116 votes and Bryan Whitney, Wichita, received 46 votes, despite Wichita not being in the First District. Statewide, Sherow received 72 percent of the vote with 306 of 1,338 precincts reporting and Whitney had 28 percent.

Delete - Merge  Both in Ellsworth County and statewide, veteran U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, Dodge City, was ahead of Tea Party candidate Milton Wolf of Leawood. The vote in Ellsworth County was 246 for Wolf and 429 for Roberts.

The U.S. Senate race also featured one of the few primary races on the Democrat side - Chad Taylor, Topeka, 86, and Patrick Wiesner, Lawrence, 78, in Ellsworth County voting.

In a closer-than-expected race in Ellsworth County, Gov. Sam Brownback and his running mate, Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer, had 452 votes, compared to their Republican primary challengers, Jennifer Winn and Robin R. Lais with 322.

The winner of the the governor's race is expected to face Kansas House minority leader Paul Davis and his running mate, Jill Docking, in the November general election.
