As students filed into Central Plains High School in Claflin Aug. 24 for the first half day of classes, principal Toby Holmes, liked the excitement level the former Thunderbirds and Wildcats exhibited as they came together as Oilers.
“The kids have been great,” he said. “They’ve been together most of the summer in athletics. I would say 70 percent of them know each other and have been together a lot.”
For the former Quivira Heights and Claflin students, this is the first year under the new Central Plains banner after the Lorraine-based USD 328 and the Claflin-based USD 354 consolidated a year ago.
Holmes said the first day of classes went well.
“We’ve been a little chaotic ... When two schools come together, there are a lot of things you take for granted — things you assume people know, and they don’t.”
