Don't miss out on Thanksgiving

POSTED: November 22, 2011 9:00 a.m.

As the weather changes outside and we have made it through Halloween and Veterans Day, our thoughts turn to the last Thursday in November, Thanksgiving. If you watch TV or the advertising circulars in the papers you will notice that even Thanksgiving is no longer a day for family, football and feasting — it is the Prelude for Black Friday. Where did the Day go for giving Thanks?
Maybe, you will call me old-fashioned or out of touch with reality, but I remember the days when Thanksgiving was more than a hurried up affair.
While growing up, I remember that it was a time to sit in the kitchen with my grandmother and mom, watching and learning. There were no instant potatoes in that kitchen and I learned how to peel potatoes for the family that would be coming for dinner. The smells that drifted from the kitchen into the living room whet the appetites of those surrounding the TV watching the Macy Day Parade.  The meal was a big production and yet I can’t recall seeing my grandmother be so happy as to have all of her children and grandchildren surrounding her.
To my grandmother giving thanks was simple … all she had to do was look in the faces of her family and know that God had gifted her with so many blessings.
Her oldest son had made it through WWII unscathed by bullets and bombs and her youngest son missed the fighting and tilled the soil like his father before him. Her two daughters, were strong faith-filled women and all of us grandchildren were the hope and dreams for the future.
There was no hurry to leave the table. Food, conversation and love remained there until the leftovers were placed in the refrigerator and a comfortable chair could be found for napping.
This Thanksgiving Day, put the shopping on hold, for there is plenty of time to do it in the next few weeks. Spend time with your family, making memories that will feed the grandchildren for the rest of their lives. Take time to be grateful for all the blessings that surround you.
May God bless you with the knowledge of knowing what is important in life.
Please, oh, Please Don’t Miss Thanksgiving.
