Make time to prepare

POSTED: December 9, 2011 7:00 a.m.

It’s a crazy holiday season from Thanksgiving to Christmas, isn’t it?
Both our daughters participated in so-called Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving in which retail stores are supposed to get themselves solidly into the black. One daughter’s shopping was modestly successful; she found a few bargains. The other failed. The parking lot of the local emporium was full, as were the lots of the bank and motel next door. Inside, the lines were hours long.  She left. Merry Christmas?
The evening of Thanksgiving, the parking lot of the church we belong to in Lindsborg was nearly empty.  Fewer than 40 out of nearly a thousand baptized members made it to church to give thanks. Happy Thanksgiving?
On Thanksgiving, we were unable, for a variety of reasons, to host the usual family gathering. So we gathered a motley crew of nine — three of whom were recruited on the spot at the grocery store while shopping for the feast — around our table on Thanksgiving. It was marvelous!
In the midst of the pervasive consumerism of our times, I pray that you will find your motley crew and make time to prepare for the greatest marvel of all.  Soon, “Unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ, the Lord.”
