MANHATTAN --- The Lady Oilers had a 2-point lead by the end of the first quarter, then slowly increased it until they whipped Oakley by a score of 46-35 in the first round of the 2A state basketball tournament in Manhattan.

Sydney Rugan scored a game-high 21 points in the win. Central Plains also had two defensive stand-outs with Jennifer Hitschmann playing a solid post beneath the rim and Katie Hipp terrorizing the mid-courts. Hitschmann and Hipp each scored seven rebounds in the win.

The fast hands and quick reflexes of Lindsay Woodmansee and Janae Heleke kept the Lady Plainsmen at odds on the perimeter of the court while the bench did a good job when called upon, including Miranda Burton, Amanda Lewis and Abby Holmes, who shot a free throw in the victory.

It was a great team effort as the Lady Plainsmen gave the Lady O’s a lot of scares in the first half, but Central Plains’ defense was solid by the third quarter. The Lady O’s offense emerged in the final stanza.

The fifth-man-in-the-stands, the Central Plains student body was on their feet for most of the game and gave the girls great support.

With the win the 19-5 Lady Oilers will face undefeated Olpe, which beat a good Meade team by a score of  59-29 after the Lady Eagles suffered a loss of a player in the game. The game will be 3 p.m. Friday, at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan.

On the other side of the bracket, no surprise to North Central Activities Association fans that the Lady Buffaloes of Republic County (20-4) beat Lebo in a 38-35 defensive struggle. The Lady Buffaloes will take on Winchester-Jefferson County North (23-1) who demolished Madison by a score of 81-29. The game will start at 6:30 p.m., Friday at Bramlage Coliseum.
