ST. JOHN — The Central Plains Oilers were too powerful for Ness City, plucking the Eagles by a 77-46 score in the first round of the St. John’s Lions Club Mid-Winter Classic in St. John.

The second-ranked 2A Oilers will meet the Pratt Greenbacks Friday at 8:15, in the semi-finals match at St. John. The winner of the match will, in all likelihood, meet the powerful top-ranked 2A Tigers of St. John-Hudson in the finals.

HOISINGTON — Halle Connally was 13 of 14 shots from the charity stripe as the Lady ‘Cats beat LaCrosse in the consolation bracket in the Hoisington Winter Jam tournament. Ellsworth had a 13-point lead, but the Lady Tigers fought back, getting to within four points late in the third quarter.

The Lady ‘Cats will meet the 10th-ranked 1A Lady Knights of Victoria at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, in the Activity Center in Hoisington.

The Bearcats and Hoisington Cardinals battled in a defensive basketball game that once again came down to a 3-point shot in the last five seconds of the contest, but the Cardinals overcame the ‘Cats 32-27.

Ellsworth will meet North Central Activities Association rival Russell at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the high school gym in Hoisington.

Read about these games in the Jan. 30 edition of the I-R.
