DES MOINES, IOWA — Ellsworth Cyclone Kyndal Hawks placed ninth in the nation in the 11-year-old discus competition — just out of the medals — and Shannon Keith placed 26th in the nation in the 15-16-year-old discus event at the Amateur Athletics Union Junior Olympics National track meet July 28-29 in Des Moines Iowa.

The AAU Junior Olympics awards medals to the top eight places.

“There are a tremendous amount of athletes here,” said Cyclone coach Caleb Svaty, who organized the fledgling team this summer and managed to coach six athletes to qualify for the top event. “It’s really something.”

Jacob Kerby, another up-and-coming thrower, will compete in the boys’ 15-16-year-old discus competition at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Natalie Soukup will compete in the 15-16-year-old girls’ shot put and Kerby will compete in the boys’ 15-16-year-old shot put event at 8 a.m. Thursday. Gentry Hawks will compete at noon in the girls’ 14-year-old discus event.

Soukup competes in the girls’ 15-16-year-old discuss and Gentry Hawks throws the shot at 8 a.m. Friday. Pole vaulter Aubrey Hawks will jump at 9 a.m. Friday.
