Kanopolis police chief warns of scam

POSTED: July 11, 2012 7:00 a.m.

Kanopolis Police Chief Kenny Bernard issued a warning at Tuesday night's meeting of the Kanopolis City Council.

He said federal authorities are investigating a case where a local woman had a Social Security check diverted away from her account and into another, which was traced to Florida. She discovered the loss of her check in time to notify federal authorities, who were able to place a block on the check. She was not out any money; however, Bernard said the case is a cautionary tale for others. He said residents need to keep an eye on their accounts and investigate when money they expect to be there doesn't materalize.
