Firefighters from seven fire departments waged a two-hour battle starting at about 2 p.m. Monday to extinguish two grass fires caused by sparks from a passing train at 25th Road and Old 40 Highway in Ellsworth County.
Firefighters from Ellsworth, Wilson, Holyrood, Marquette, Geneseo and Saline District 3 responded under a mutal aid agreement with the Kanopolis Fire Department to fight the fire, which burned between 100-200 acres of pasture. No structures were burned, nor injuries sustained.
According to Ellsworth fire chief Bob Kepka, firefighters from Lincoln and Beverly-Westfall were also summoned to fight the fire, but were turned back in route after the fire had been contained.
Kepka said a total of 20 firefighters and nine apparatus from the Ellsworth Fire Department fought the fire.
