Opera House supporters move forward

POSTED: July 21, 2011 1:16 p.m.

The transformation of what remains of the Wilson Czech Opera House into an open air theater has moved one step closer to reality with the recent hiring of a project architect.

"We’re making progress," said Allison Ford, president of the Wilson Czech Opera House Corporation Board of Directors. "We hired Hernly and Associates, Inc. of Lawrence."

Ford said architect Stanley C. Hernly is putting together two plans for the board. The first plan for the open air theater, would keep the two- story walls as they are now, as well as finish the front to make it look like it did before the fire. The fire destroyed the historic structure and damaged or destroyed several adjacent buildings a little over a year ago. Hernly’s second plan would remove a portion of the second story walls.
