The newly renovated, original lighted sign dating back to the late 1930s will be relighted once again atop the Midland Railroad Hotel in Wilson, during a ceremony at 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3.
In 1998, the original sign, located on top of the popular landmark, was the first item to be removed to mark the beginning of the hotel’s five-year renovation project.
In 2003, the renovation was considered essentially finished, and the hotel re-opened for business. However, the original sign was not returned to the roof top as planned.
A year ago, Tom and Heddy Mahoney of Dorrance purchased the hotel and opened it Labor Day weekend as the Midland Railroad Hotel. During the past few months, the sign was retrieved and renovated with new lettering and paint.
“It’s more about the community than us — to show that we are doing the right thing,” Tom Mahoney said.
On Aug. 18, the sign was erected in an upright manner and relocated in its original spot on the hotel’s roof.
“Now, after 13 years from when the sign was removed and as many as 23 years since it has been lighted, the sign is ready to resume its rightful spot as a city landmark,” Mahoney said.
