Opal Christine Ontjes

Opal Christine Ontjes, 97, Geneseo, died Wednesday, July 9, 2014.
She was born Feb. 13, 1917, in Geneseo to Virgil and Mayme Loutzenhiser Bennett. She was a lifetime resident of Geneseo, where she taught grades one through six at a country school north of town, after a year at McPherson College in 1934. She attended Emporia State Teachers College, where she received her Lifetime Teachers Certificate. She also attended Hays College and taught third and fourth grades for two years at McCracken, then fourth grade for five years at Lyons.
She married John Vance Ontjes Feb. 7, 1942, in Geneseo. After his death Sept. 7, 1970, she was a teacher’s aide in the Geneseo School System for more than 20 years.
She also was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Linda, who passed away in 1956 at the age of 6.
Survivors include: two sons, James (Jeri) Ontjes and Dennis (Debbie) Ontjes, both of Hutchinson; a daughter, Ruth Ann (Bill) Asbury, Lyons; grandchildren, Darci (Jason) Meyeres, Chase, Deric (Dara) Griffis, Hutchinson, Debi (Jim) Deal, Garden City, John (Celeste) Ontjes, Hutchinson, Stacy (K.B.) Criss, Humboldt, Jason (Erin) Ontjes, Nickerson, Vance (Shelby) Ontjes, Cheney, Blake Ontjes, McPherson, Jessica (Russell) Wasinger, Hutchinson and Sgt. Zach Kelly, Fort Bragg; and 19 great-grandchildren and one due in November.
Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 11, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at the Church of Christ in Lyons, Robert Taverner and Steve Sears officiating. Burial will be in Geneseo Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Church of Christ, Lyons, in care of the funeral home.
