“NIE has been a very valuable tool for my class and the school as a whole. As teachers, we are always looking for links between the school, our students and the community. The newspaper helps to strength that link. Seeing their pictures in the paper or the pictures of one of their friends or one of their friends’ families reinforces their place in the community.”

Dear Friends of Education:

Three years ago, the Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter started a Newspaper in Education program. Every school year, we distribute free copies of the I-R to schools at Wilson, Ellsworth, Kanopolis and Holyrood.

In 2007, for the first time, we are expanding the program to include two serials, which we will publish in the paper. The first will be an original series on the City of Ellsworth, in honor of the town’s 140th anniversary. Once the series appears in the I-R, it will be released through the Kansas Newspaper Association to NIE programs across the state. In future years, we hope to do similar projects with the histories of other Ellsworth County towns.

The second series was produced by Kansas Farm Bureau as part of the organization’s effort to educate students about agriculture.

Both of these serials are intended to give students a better understanding of their community and its history.

The NIE program relies on donations from area businesses and foundations.

We hope you will consider joining these businesses and become part of our NIE program. Our sponsors are very important to us and the success of the NIE program. For your generous donation, you will receive the following:
