Wilson Council moves ahead with grant application

The Wilson City Council moved forward Monday night with the application for a state “urgent need" grant to help pay for the $160,000 cleanup cost of the historic Wilson Opera House, which was gutted by fire this past November.

The series of votes to pave the way for the request to the state came following a 30-minute public hearing. Only a few Wilson residents attended the session, including Roger Hubert, who has tried to convince city officials to at least save the walls of the limestone Opera House, which are still standing, but pose a safety hazard.

At one point, the exchange between Hubert and council member Leland Francis became heated as Hubert questioned the thoroughness of the investigation conducted by the state fire marshal, who has told city officials the cause of the blaze is undetermined because the fire was “too hot and too fast." The city also has requested a written report from the state.

“That is his job and he will do his job as best he can," Francis said.

Also present at the public hearing was Doug McKinney of the North-Central Regional Planning Commission. At their regular meeting, council members approved having the agency act as administrator of the Community Development Block Grant through the Kansas Department of Commission. The job will add another $8,500 to the cost of cleanup.

The fee is part of the grant, along with engineering and actual cleanup costs. The only money not covered by the state would be $1,000 for an environmental review and Mayor Eleanor Hunter said the foundation that owns the Opera House is expected to have enough money from the insurance to pay that bill.

McKinney said the environmental review already has started and so far responses from the involved agencies have been positive.
