Facilities study next step for USD 328

Last Updated: February 07, 2010

The hiring of Dr. G. Kent Stewart, consultant for educational facilities and community relations, was approved by consensus Monday, during a special meeting of the Lorraine-based USD 328 Board of Education.

Stewart, emertius professor at Kansas State University, Manhattan, will perform a study of the facilities in both the Lorraine and Claflin school districts.

Board president Alan Siemer said the location of schools in a combined district is uppermost on the minds of patrons.

Steve Woolf, principal at Quivira Heights Elementary-Junior High School in Holyrood and USD 328 superintendent for the 2010-2011 school year, made the contact with Stewart, whom he described as the "go to" guy when it comes to reviewing facilities.

“He is kind of known as the rural Kansas guy," Woolf said. “Everybody who knows him, respects him. He has done work for us, for Claflin and for everybody around here before."

The approval was part  of a discussion of priorities board members developed with regard to due diligence clause in the consolidation agreement with the Claflin school board.

Claflin must also agree to hire Stewart.

“The thought was tonight we'd open it up for a little bit of discussion about what board members see is the highest priorities we should be focusing on first as we move forward," Siemer said.
