Last Updated: February 02, 2010

Ms. Vicky Jewell, after 40 years of teaching, will be retiring at the conclusion of this year. We recently sat down with her and asked her a few questions about her career. Here are her responses to those questions:

• What's your favorite past time and why?
"Golf and flowers," said Jewell. "Golf is a challenge, and flowers are the prettiest thing, and it's interesting to watch them grow."

• What have you coached and taught in the past?
"Girls basketball in 1976 at Lincoln Middle School and I've also coached track, volleyball and basketball for 26 years," she said. "Track is my favorite."
•How long have you been teaching and have you enjoyed it?
"I've loved it," she said.  "I've been teaching 37 years full-time and three years part-time.

• What are the different schools you have taught at? "I have taught at Concordia, Sacred Heart, Lincoln and Ellsworth," she said. "I've enjoyed Ellsworth the most."

• What's your favorite part about teaching? "Watching the growth of kids in the English area," she said. "The kids walk in and don't know very much and walk out and do."

• Where did you get your college degree?
"Fort Hays State University," she said.

• Why did English interest you so much?
"It was an easy grade," she said. "I took a literature or an English class and thought it was an easy A."

• What are you planning on doing after your retirement?
"Substituting, playing golf and planting flowers," she said."I want to play at Torri Pines in San Diego."

• Who has been your most favorite person to work with? "Mrs. Bunch and Mr. Parsons," she said. "Mrs. Bunch is a sweetheart and Mr. Parsons is a good guy. I've enjoyed teasing him."
