Thunderbirds destroy Chase

     BUSHTON - Quivira Heights, ranked second in Class 1A by The Hutchinson News, jumped out to a 27-3 first quarter lead and went on to defeat the Chase Kats 82-34 in a non-league high school boys contest Tuesday, Jan. 26 at Bushton.  The win improves the T-birds' overall record to 13-0.

     Gunner Phelan scored 14 of the T-birds' first 20 points on 7 field goals as Quivira Heights took command early and led 20-1 at the 2:44 mark of the opening period.  The other 13 T-bird points in the first quarter came from Jordan Dahlke (6), Jacob Ingham (5), and Tyler Riedel (2).

     Quivira Heights outscored Chase 19-7 in the second stanza to take a 46-10 halftime lead.  Dahlke scored eight points in the quarter and Phelan had seven (including a trey), with Ingham and Riedel each scoring two points.  Phelan scored 21 of his game-high 23 points and Dahlke scored 14 of his 22 points in the first half.

     The T-birds outscored the Kats 28-20 in the third quarter to take an insurmountable 74-30 lead at the third quarter stop.  Taylor Siemsen scored 11 of his 13 points in the quarter (including two treys), Dahlke scored eight,  Ingham scored five (including a trey), and Phelan and Riedel scored two points apiece.

     Quivira Heights outscored Chase 8-4 in the fourth quarter to emerge victorious by the final count of 82-34.  Tanner Dahlke scored four points for the T-birds on a pair of baskets, while Brenton Turner and Siemsen added one basket apiece in the quarter.

     The T-birds placed four players in double figures with Phelan leading the way with 23 points, followed closely by Jordan Dahlke with 22.  Siemsen tossed in 13 points and Ingham added 12.  Riedel, Tanner Dahlke, and Turner closed out the T-bird scoring with 6, 4, and 2 points respectively.  Joe Kratzer, Sam Hiechel, and Bryce Straub also played in the game for Quivira Heights.

     For the game, Quivira Heights made 34 of 60 two-point field goal attempts (56.7 percent) and 4 of 15 shots from 3-point range (26.7 percent).  Chase made 8 of 36 two-point field goal attempts (22.2 percent) and 5 of 13 shots from behind the 3-point arc (38.5 percent).
     Quivira Heights made 2 of 5 free throw attempts (40 percent) and turned the ball over nine times.  Chase made three of six free throw attempts (50 percent) and committed 24 turnovers which led to 20 T-bird points.
