Lady T-birds boom over Lady Kats

     BUSHTON - The Quivira Heights Lady Thunderbirds, ranked ninth in Class 1A by The Hutchinson News, used a balanced scoring attack with five players scoring in double figures and combining for 71 points en route to a 75-34 victory over the Chase Lady Kats in a non-league high school girls game Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Bushton.  The T-birds' overall mark now stands at 12-1, while the Kats' record falls to 4-9.

     Kinsey Phelan scored a team-high 18 points, followed closely by Kieran Phelan's 17, and Lindsey Woodmansee's 16, with Staci Clark and Shelby Klima adding 10 points apiece for the Lady T-birds.  Miranda Burton completed the T-bird scoring with four points.  Katelyn Zink, Stacey Behnke, Shannon Orth, Danielle Stewart, and Alanna Burris also played in the game for the T-birds.

     Quivira Heights raced to a 27-7 first quarter lead, with Kinsey Phelan scoring nine points (including a trey) and Woodmansee scoring seven points (including a trey).  Clark scored four points in the quarter and Kieran Phelan added three.  Burton and Klima each scored two points.

     The T-birds outscored the Kats 18-6 in the second quarter to take a 45-13 lead at the break.  Clark scored six points in the quarter and Kinsey Phelan and Klima each tossed in four.  Woodmansee and Burton added two points apiece.

     Kieran Phelan knocked down four shots from behind the 3-point arc and added another basket in the third quarter for 14 points, Woodmansee scored five points (including a trey), and Kinsey Phelan and Klima added two points apiece in the quarter as the T-birds outscored the Kats 23-14 to take a 68-27 lead after three quarters of action.

     Each team scored seven points in the fourth quarter, as the T-birds prevailed by the final score of 75-34.  Kinsey Phelan canned a 3-ball and Woodmansee and Klima each scored two points in the quarter to account for the T-bird points.

     Quivira Heights made 23 of 44 two-point field goal attempts (52.3 percent) and drained eight of 23 from 3-point land (34.8 percent).  Kieran Phelan made four treys for the T-birds (all in the third quarter), and Kinsey Phelan and Woodmansee each canned two).  Chase made 10 of 35 two-point field goal attempts (28.6 percent) and made one of 10 shots from 3-point range (10 percent).

     Clark was the leading T-bird rebounder with 11, and Klima grabbed six boards.  Kinsey Phelan and Woodmansee each had three rebounds, and Burris had two.  Kieran Phelan, Burton, Orth, and Zink each had one.  Clark, Klima, and Woodmansee each had one block in the game.  Kieran Phelan and Kinsey Phelan had eight and six steals respectively for the T-birds.  Woodmansee had three steals, and Clark and Zink each recorded one.  Kinsey Phelan led the T-birds in steals with seven, and Kieran Phelan had three.  Clark and Woodmansee had one steal apiece.
  
     The Lady Thunderbirds made 5 of 9 free throw attempts (55.6 percent) and committed just six turnovers in the contest.  The Lady Kats made 11 of 19 free throw attempts (57.9 percent) and turned the ball over 26 times (which led to 14 T-bird points).
