House of Memories Benefit Soup Supper & Bake Sal JOYCE KRAUS Wednesday December 02, 2009
Most of us know that the historic Wilson Opera House, Dr. Whitmer's Clinic, and the Johnson building on Highway 40 in the heart of town burned November 6, 2009. They are all total losses, including the House of Memories museum in the lower level of the Opera House.
A benefit soup supper and bake sale will be held for the House of Memories museum on Sunday, December 6th starting at about 4 p.m. till around 6:30 p.m. The soup supper will follow the Chamber of Commerce sponsored BINGO, which starts at 2 o'clock at Wilson Senior Center.
Funds raised from the soup supper and bake sale will allow us to purchase display cases to replace those lost in the fire. Hopefully, they will be "filled up" with memorabilia once again. Until a building is located for a new museum, plans are to place these display cases in various businesses around town where people can donate and share "new" old stuff! Hopefully Czech glass, photographs, military memorabilia, antique toys, 100-year-old wedding dresses, Czech outfits, books, news clippings, articles of businesses once thriving, old equipment, etc. can be collected and displayed once again in the Czech Capital of Kansas.
A display table (pool table) will be reserved for items you might bring along to the soup supper to share for the evening. Pledges will be recorded of items you will eventually wish to donate to the "new" museum.
Come and support this effort. This fundraiser will receive matching funds from the Santa Fe Trail Chapter of Thrivent. Donations will be accepted.
Wilson High School Students JOYCE KRAUS Tuesday December 01, 2009
Jim Patry, a proud Wilson supporter, submitted his observations and would like to recognize Wilson High School students for recently being honored for "Outstanding Service" in several areas.
The Wilson FFA Chapter was awarded second place among 160 chapters in Kansas in their Chapter and Community Activities. This ranking allowed the Wilson Chapter to compete in the National Award competition. The Wilson Chapter was selected to be in the top ten out of 7,400 chapters in the NATION with their Community Activities. This is quite an honor for the chapter and the school. Mrs. Lindsey Huseman and her students deserve praise for competing with the “Best" in the State and National Chapter Awards.
The Junior-Senior High students were given the “Governor's Achievement Award" based on the state's assessment tests awarded by the Kansas Department of Education. To qualify, the school must have met yearly progress in both reading and math. Wilson was awarded twenty-one “Standard of Excellence Awards," an increase of four honors from last year. The students must have ranked in the top five percent on their assessment tests to achieve this award. WHS was the only school to be recognized for their “Standard of Achievement" in the county. Our students have done well because of the excellent administration and teachers we have in our school. The Wilson Eco-Meet Teams ranked among the top at the Wilson Lake Meet this fall. The “B" team placed 1st, while the “D" team came in 2nd among twenty-two area schools. Winning the meet allowed the Wilson teams to compete in the State Eco-Meet Contest in Larned. There were twenty-four teams competing at the state meet, with Wilson “B" team placing 11th and the “D" team 20th. Wilson “B" team ranked 2nd in “Interpretation of Skit."
The Eco-Meet is an outdoor-oriented quiz bowl team dealing with the plants and animals of Kansas. It is enjoyable to know that we have students who take an interest in nature. Melanie Falcon has coached the teams to be competitive.
The girls' volleyball team advanced to the Sub-State Tournament with a record of 25 wins and 13 losses. Three Lady Dragon players won spots on the Twin Lakes League team for the 2009 all-league team. Coach Bob Powers and his girls worked very hard this season.
The boys' football team upset unbeaten Sylvan Grove in a “District" game which allowed the boys to play in the District Play-Offs. The Wilson Dragons landed four players on the Twin Lakes League for the 2009 season. Coach Tony Brokes and Assistant Coach Leland Francis molded the boys as a team.
Wilson is a growing school with 24 new faces and a population increase of thirteen students. I have always known that you get a great deal of talent and hard work from students in a small school, where there are dedicated administration and teachers to provide instruction.
Let everyone congratulate the students “For a job very well done." These students not only represent the school, but the town of Wilson. Congratulations to the students, administration, and teachers of Wilson Elem/High School. We are proud of you!
