New magazine promotes region

Ever wonder about the history of the Vanier Family and CK Ranch in Ellsworth and Saline counties? Or Wilson’s talented blacksmith, Winslow Janda?

You’ll find these stories and many more on the pages of the Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter’s new publication, “The Magazine. Dedicated to the People and Places of Central Kansas.”

These stories carry familiar names, including former Salina Journal writers Tim Unruh, Gordon Fiedler Jr. and Gary Demuth and Ellsworth County’s own Josh Svaty.

The cover shows a portion of the 122-year grain elevator in north Salina that has received a makeover, thanks to a $260,000 donation from John and Kim Vanier through the Salina Kanvas project. John’s father, Jack, gave money to the National Drovers Hall of Fame for the restoration of downtown’s signature Insurance Building.

If you’re a subscriber of the I-R, The Magazine will be included in the newspaper once every quarter — at no extra charge. You’ll find the premier edition of The Magazine in this week’s I-R. The second edition is set to appear the first week of February.

Or — for non-subscribers — the magazine is available for subscription by itself for $29 a year.

Subscription information is available on Page 16 of The Magazine’s first edition.

“No place stands by itself,” said Linda Mowery-Denning, publisher of the new magazine. “We thought it was time Central Kansas had a venue to talk about its common bonds and goals.”
