Despite a year marked by persistent drought, last week’s heavy rains caused severe flash flooding in parts of Kansas, including Manhattan, where 300 people were forced to evacuate after flood waters began rising during the night.

The weekend’s powerful thunderstorms were only a precursor to more rain that fell over much of the week after a system stalled over central Kansas, adding even more moisture to an area already waterlogged.
