Ellsworth County’s Emergency Medical Service has received state-wide attention in recent weeks, thanks to a Dec. 1 wreck that left two employees injured. Jeremiah Brown and Rick Soukup are both away from work — Soukup for two or three months, Brown for at least a year. The two were on an ambulance run from Ellsworth to Salina when their ambulance collided with a farm truck near Brookville.

Those of us who are old-school enough to still use a dictionary can strike one phrase from its pages. “Local control” is pretty much dead in Kansas, the victim of Gov. Brownback and lawmakers who follow the same treacherous political path.

Several years ago, when Kansas Legislators started talking about removing public notices from the state’s newspapers and allowing cities, counties and school boards to place them on websites — any website — we thought the idea was so obviously flawed it didn’t stand a chance of passage.
