Diggin' in the dirt

The Wilson Winners 4-H Club helped spruce up Lions Club Park in Wilson on a recent sunny day. New soil, plants, and mulch were put in three planters in the park. The club received a grant from the Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation of $1,200 and members added $800 to complete the project.

Freedom does not come cheap

Many view the three-day weekend at the end of May as a great holiday for relaxing and the beginning of summertime.

While it is both of those things, the official reason for Memorial Day is, of course, remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country. From the Revolutionary War and the loss of 4,435 soldiers to WWII, where 291,755 American soldiers perished, we are reminded that the cost of freedom and democracy can be great.

Mary Soukup is appointed to Ellsworth City Council

Ellsworth resident Mary Soukup will replace Ellsworth city council member Holly Fries and finish out her term, which runs through November of 2019. The decision came Monday night as Fries said good-by. She and her family plan to move to Salina.

After seven years on the council, Fries has decided to close one chapter of her life as Soukup begins a new one. Soukup has been in policy making since graduating from Kansas State University, including a stint working in Washington D.C..

Camping creates memories of fun-filled days. Attending summer camp can be a time for experiencing nature and the outdoors, making new friends, and learning life skills.

Summer camp is more than just a vacation. Campers learn selfconfidence, cooperation with others, and how to live in different communities. Camping teaches life lessons that contribute to children’s adjustment into their adult years.

FASHION WITH TRADITION

Miss Czech/Slovak Kansas Pageant raised $420 with a fashion show Saturday at the Midland Railroad Hotel in Wilson. Authentic Czech Kro and designer fashions from Ellsworth’s Classy Lady Boutique were modeled by current and past queens.

Mama bears and bullies

My kids have always referred to me as a Mama Bear and I wear that proudly! Mama bears are fierce ... fierce in protecting, fierce in expectations, fierce with stiff justice as consequences of poor decisions. I support anti-bullying programs but believe that there is another piece to this. It is unfortunate but all of us will deal with a bully at some point — on the job, on a committee, even at church. Learning the skills to deal with bullying behavior may be one of the best life skills we can teach.

Bearcat students give back to the community

Volunteering and community involvement — something we all need to strive to do better at and something the Ellsworth Junior-Senior high school students recently put into practice.

EJSHS held its annual Bearcat Give Back program Friday. At the same time, Ellsworth Elementary along with Kanopolis Middle School hosted its annual theme day for 360 students in grades K-6.
