Sentimental Journey

By Kurtis Gaston

It was a step of faith in a world wrecked by war and uncertainty.

He had completed 50 bombing missions over Europe as the waist gunner and later an upper turret gunner in a B-17. He was stationed at Boeing Field in Seattle, awaiting possible reassignment to the Pacific and B-29’s.

Living through one tour of duty in Europe meant you beat the odds. Another tour, with the possibility of bombing Japan itself, might be stretching his luck.

Watering tips for garden and household plants

By Michelle Buchanan

We all know plants need water, but how much and how often is generally the big question. Some areas have had saturated or near-saturated soils for several weeks now. Gardeners often assume that watering won’t be needed for quite some time as soil moisture levels are very high. Actually, watering may be needed much sooner than you expect.

Excessive rain can drive oxygen out of the soil and literally drown roots. Therefore, as we enter hotter, drier weather, the plants with damaged root systems may be very susceptible to a lack of water. Don’t forget to check your plants for signs of wilting or leaf scorching and water as needed. If irrigation is called for, water deeply and infrequently. Usually once per week is sufficient depending on the weather. Soil should be moist but not waterlogged.
