2018 year in review

Kenny Talbott celebrated his 80th birthday in March.

Karen Teague plays pool in the back room of the Marquette Senior Center. The Center received a facelift in 2018, with a clean-up and fresh paint.

These cattle were seen cutting through Marquette on their way to fresh pastures. Just goes to show you never know what you’re going to see in “Beautiful Downtown Marquette”.

Marquette’s GALs (Gently Aged Ladies), members of the War and Peace Quilters, made this quilt for Twila Lindfors to honor her for 60 years of service to the American Legion.

Alumni of Marquette High School met in May to visit the old school and visit old friends. Max Buffington is shown reading a poem he wrote to honor his class.

Kanin and Kasyn enjoyed the summer lunch program sponsored by Elim Lutheran Church and The Marquette United Methodist Church. Lunch was served every weekday from the end of school to the beginning of the next school year.

Horn graduates from KLA

Ethan Horne of Marquette was one of 20 KLA members from across the state to graduate from the Kansas Livestock Association’s (KLA) Young Stockmen’s Academy (YSA). Merck Animal Health partnered with KLA to host members in their 20s for a series of four seminars throughout 2018. This class brings the total number of YSA graduates to 260.

Attending the KLA Convention in Wichita in November was the final session for this year’s class. The three-day event provided participants the opportunity to gain additional industry knowledge and interact with other KLA members from across the state. YSA members got a firsthand look at the inner workings of the association by attending the KLA Chairmen’s Circle meeting.

So long, Dorito

Mary Kay and Kerry Lindh, with their guide dog in training, Dorito.

Dorito, a black lab from Kansas Speciality Dogs Services has returned to KSDS to complete his formal training as a guide dog. Guide dogs are specially trained to provide mobility assistance for individuals who are blind or visually impaired to travel safely from one place to another. They do this by navigating sidewalks, finding curbs and stairs, crossing streets safely and avoiding obstacles including overhangs.

Guide dogs know left and right and are helpful with object identification when asked to “find” a door, counter, elevator, escalator, sidewalk, chair, etc.

The new sign for the Marquette Learning Center has been hung as the center prepares to open. Furnishings are arriving and flooring is being installed.

A lot has been going on the past couple of weeks at Marquette Learning Center. We have furnishings arriving, the flooring is approaching completion, the sign has been hung and donor names are being added to the recognition board. We are getting close to adding the finishing touches.

The fire marshal said that once we have the proper exit signs installed, he will be out directly to do his final inspection with KDHE to follow with their initial survey.
