Lady ‘Cats beat Lady Leopards

RUSSELL — The Lady Broncos of Russell defeated Ellsworth, 44-28, Monday in a North Central Activities Association make-up girls’ basketball game in Russell. Russell posted a 19-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. Ellsworth scored 11 points and held the Lady Broncs to 10 for a 29-19 half-time score. Russell scored 10 points and the Lady ‘Cats made five in the third quarter for a 39-24 score. The Lady Broncs scored five points and Ellsworth made four in the final stanza.

SALINA —  The second-ranked 2A Sacred Heart Knights defeated Ellsworth 53-38 in an action-packed NCAA game in Salina. The Bearcats had a good first half and were within five points, 29-24, at the halftime buzzer.

 

A much-improved Lady Knight basketball team defeated the Lady ‘Cats by a score of 61-35.

Haase wins regional 3A-2A-1A title

Bearcat David Koralek III, wrestling in the 132-pound weight class, attempts a switch in his final match Saturday at the 3A-2A-1A regional tournament in Beloit.

BELOIT — Bearcat 195-pound grappler Ethan Haase won the 3A-2A-1A Beloit regional wrestling tournament by fall Saturday in Beloit.

 

Haase wrestled well in the final bout and had the upper hand for most of the match.

Haase qualifies for State wrestling tournament

BELOIT — Bearcat 195-pound grappler Ethan Haase qualified to wrestle in the 3A-2A-1A State wrestling tournament by winning the quarter-finals match of the championship bracket Friday at the regional tournament in Beloit.

 

Haase will wrestle in the championship match Saturday in Beloit, following the results of the consolation brackets.

ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Bearcats beat Lincoln, 50-32, in a non-conference game at Ellsworth. The ‘Cats took control of the game in the third quarter.

 

The Lady ‘Cats got a first quarter lead and held on to get a 43-39 win over the Lady Leopards, who threatened to tie the game in the final minute of play.

CLAFLIN — The top-ranked 2A Central Plains Oilers defeated a good Ness City ballclub 75-52 in a CPL league game in Claflin. The Eagles were within 10 points of Central Plains at halftime, a feat few ball clubs have accomplished this season.

 

The top-ranked, defending two-time 2A State champion Lady Oilers cruised to a 55-22 win over the Lady Lady Eagles in the girls’ game. As in the boys’ game, Ness City is a better team than the score implies.

Oilers roll over La Crosse

LA CROSSE — The top-ranked and undefeated 2A Central Plains Oilers defeated La Crosse 82-31 Friday in La Crosse. The Oilers jumped to a 23-9 lead by the end of the first quarter. Central Plains added 16 points and La Crosse scored four in the second period for an Oilers 39-13 half-time advantage.

Bearcats beat Buffaloes in overtime

The Ellsworth Bearcats came back from a 10-point half-time deficit to defeat North Central Activities rival Republic County, 59-58 in a thrilling overtime win Friday in Ellsworth. Ellsworth won the first quarter, scoring 10 points and holding the Buffaloes to nine. Republic County came alive in the second stanza, scoring 15 points while holding the ‘Cats to four for a 24-14 half-time lead.

Lady O’s defeat La Crosse

LA CROSSE — The undefeated, top-ranked and two-time defending champion 2A Lady Oilers defeated fourth-ranked 1A Division I La Crosse, 63-40, Friday in La Crosse. The Lady Oilers played without the services of senior forward Taylor Rolfs, who is still nursing a foot injury. Rolfs is expected to return to the hardwood for the Feb. 23 game against Ellinwood.

ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Bearcats defeated Republic County 59-58 in overtime at the Bearcat Lair in Ellsworth.

 

The Lady ‘Cats were defeated by the Lady Buffaloes by a score of 48-27.

 

LACROSSE — The top-ranked and undefeated 2A Central Plains Oilers beat LaCrosse 82-31.
