Bearcats begin season with a roar

The Ellsworth Bearcats began their football season against the Russell Broncos who defeated them in the 2016 season opener.

This year was a much different story.

There were lots of fans on both sides present to witness the rematch, but the Broncos were no rival for the Bearcats, who posted a 34-6 win.

Talent returns to Oiler tennis team

CLAFLIN — Coach Gary Bittner expects the 2017 Oiler tennis team to be a fun one to watch.

Central Plains returns three players from this past year’s regional squad.

Seniors Hannah Beran and Mikayla Menges are expected to partner for the Number One doubles position.

“The duo has some work to do, but they have the capability to play well together,” Bittner said.

Ellsworth prepares for eclipse

Dale Brungardt plans to travel to the Beatrice Neb. area Aug. 21 to see his first-ever 100 percent totality solar eclipse.

As a former physics and math teacher, this kind of event captures the full attention of the Ellsworth-Kanopolis- Geneseo School District superintendent.

McGees score again at nationals

Steve and Shirley McGee, rural Brookville, recently returned from the NRA National Championships held at Camp Atterbury, Ind.

They competed in the Mid Range and Long Range Nationals and won several awards.

During the Mid Range phase, they teamed up with two additional members of the U.S. National Team to win the team matches for the 4th year in a row.

Davis leads receivers in bowl win

EL DORADO — The East had won the last two Shrine Bowls, and after erasing a 14-0 deficit, the East was headed for another win Saturday night at Butler County Community College’s Veterans Sports Complex.

A safety with a minute to play changed all that to give the game to the West, 22-21.

Guardians of the Ellsworth pool

It’s a 96-degree day and you decide to go cool off at the swimming pool. While in the water, you hear a whistle blow and then see a lifeguard dive into the deep end to bring a child to the side. That is called a “save.”

The Ellsworth Swimming Pool lifeguards are there to do just that — to save you and your children from getting hurt or drowning.
