‘Cats pin Southeast of Saline

The Ellsworth Bearcats won Southeast of Saline’s wrestling dual Friday with four wins to three for Southeast.

Ellsworth added four more open-match wins, giving the ‘Cats an overwhelming win with 46 points to the Trojans’ 18.

‘Cats kick off the season in style

The Ellsworth Bearcats took their first victory of the season in the home season opener against the Lyons Lions, by a score of 62-43, Friday.

The ‘Cats began their lead that would carry out to the end of the game, with a score of 25-13 by the end of the first quarter. In the second, they fought hard and held close to the Lions, who scored 14, while the ‘Cats scored 15. This brought the halftime score to 40-27.

Bolton joins Blazers for run

Josiah Bolton, a junior at Ellsworth Jr./Sr. High School and state cross country medalist, had the opportunity to run with the Brokaw Blazers Saturday, Nov. 18, in the 2017 Cross Country Coaches National Cross Country Youth Championships near Cincinnati, Ohio.

Bolton ran a personal best time of 17:35 and placed 42 out of 98 in the 15-16-year-old division. His team received a 3rd-place medal.

Lady Dragons look forward to a good 2017-18 season

This season has the potential for success written all over it for Wilson’s Lady Dragons. Head coach Rod Seehafer returns four of his top scorers from the 2016-17 team.

Seniors Katelyn Zelenka, 5’6 guard, averages 12 points per game, and seniors Riley Dietz, 5’7” guard, averages 11.

Lady Oilers shoot for five in a row

A year ago, Independent-Reporter sports editor Mark McCoy wrote this about the Lady O’s.

“It’s no secret that the three-time 2A State champion Lady Oilers of Central Plains have a target on their back as the dominant girls’ basketball team in Central Kansas for the past three years.”

Young, larger group readies for grappler action

Ellsworth is still a young wrestling team; however, several Bearcats have another year of experience under the belts that should help as the season continues.

“We have a fairly larger group than in past years,” said head coach Steven Thorburn. “We have some freshmen that we expect to see great things from in the future and good Bearcat senior leadership.

Another season, another opportunity for improvement

The Bearcats seem to improve with the seasons.

In 2015-16, Ellsworth ended with a 12-10 win-loss record, but had several close games, including pulling within five points at half-time with second- ranked 2A Sacred Heart in the North Central Activities Association league game in Salina.

This could be a very good year for Lady ‘Cats

Head coach Ken Cravens appears to have turned around the culture of the Lady ‘Cats basketball program, as Ellsworth comes off one of its best seasons in several years.

From a 4-17 win-loss record in 2015-16 to a 16-6 record this past season, Cravens has players who have bought into the program.

Spearville halts Oilers title quest

SPEARVILLE — Last Friday, one of the biggest rivalries in 8-man division 1 took place in Spearville. The past three meetings has ultimately resulted in a state playoff berth for the winning team. Looking for the playoff win, as well as revenge for the past two years the Oilers played what could be considered the best football game of their season. Unfortunately, the Oilers lost 28-32 in a heartbreaking last second play which ended their season with a 9-2 record.
