Dragons defeated in three overtimes

WILSON — It took three overtime periods for the fifth-ranked 1A Division II Mustangs of Sylvan-Lucas Unified to defeat the ninth-ranked 1A Division II Wilson Dragons 52-48, Friday in a King and Queen of Courts game at Wilson. The arch-rivals battled to a 9-9 score by the end of the first quarter. The Mustangs won a 1-point halftime lead, 22-21, by scoring 13 points and holding Wilson to 12 in the second stanza.

‘Cats bring home medals from tourney

BELLEVILLE — Four Bearcats placed second at the North Central Activities Association League wrestling tournament Feb. 9 in Belleville. Tyson Hall, David Koralek III and Zac Schneider and Ethan Curnutt brought home the silver for Ellsworth. Beloit won the tournament as a team with 164.5 points. Ellsworth placed sixth with 66.

Blujays beat Dragons

TIPTON — The top-ranked 1A Division I St. John’s of Beloit-Tipton Blujays defeated the Wilson Dragons, 66-44, Friday in Tipton.


Statistics were unavailable at press time.


The Dragons (10-6) played the Trojans Tuesday in Tescott. Results were not available at press time.

Trojans spoil ‘Cat Homecoming

The Ellsworth Bearcats lost Friday’s Homecoming game, 70-63, to the Beloit Trojans in Ellsworth.


Beloit opened the game with a bucket, but Ellsworth point guard Jordan Base scored for the ‘Cats to tie the game 2-2 at the 7:29 mark. Beloit answered with a field goal and free throw to gain a 5-2 lead before Kaden Davis scored a bucket with 4:28 on the clock for a 5-4 tally.

Weekend sports updates

ELLSWORTH -- The Beloit Trojans ended Bearcat Homecoming dreams of a victory with a 70-60 win Friday in the Bearcat Lair at Ellsworth.
The Trojans got a good lead and Ellsworth did not recover.


The Lady Trojans defeated Ellsworth 57-43 in the girls' game.


TIPTON -- Top-ranked 1A Division 1  St. John's of Beloit/Tipton defeated the ninth-ranked 1A Division II Wilson Dragons 47-40 in a tight game at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Tipton.


The seventh-ranked 1A Division 1 Lady Blujays defeated the 10th-ranked 1A Division II Lady Dragons (their first week in the Kansas Basketball Coaches' Association's poll) by a score of 66-34.

Lady ‘Cats lead NCAA

GYPSUM — The Lady Bearcats eased into first place (6-0) in the North Central Kansas Activities Association with a 36-32 win over Southeast of Saline, Friday in Gypsum. The Lady ‘Cats jumped to a 12-4 lead by the end of the first quarter. Both teams scored six points in the second stanza for an 18-10 halftime score in favor of Ellsworth.

Bearcats upset Trojans

GYPSUM — The Ellsworth Bearcats upset fifth-ranked 3A Southeast of Saline, 55-50, on the Trojans’ home court Friday in Gypsum, getting a big win for the up-and-coming program. The Bearcats got the win by playing a good brand of team basketball. Jordan Base did a great job at the point guard slot, watching for his open teammates and getting the ball into their hands so that they could score.

Lady ‘Cats place third at tourney

HOISINGTON — The Lady Bearcats placed third Saturday with a 48-36 win over LaCrosse at the Cardinal Winter Jam basketball tournament at the Activity Center in Hoisington. LaCrosse moved to a 15-10 lead in the first quarter. The Lady Leopards scored 11 points and held Ellsworth to 10 in the second period to make the halftime score 26-23 in favor of LaCrosse.

Bearcats place second at Winter Jam

GREAT BEND — The Hoisington Cardinals defeated Ellsworth, 63-51, Saturday in the championship game of the Cardinal Winter Jam at the Activity Center in Hoisington. Hoisington scored seven points in the first quarter and held the ‘Cats to five. The Cardinals put 16 points through the hoop in the second stanza, while Ellsworth scored 10 for a 23-15 halftime score.

‘Cats take second at Cardinal Winter Jam

HOISINGTON — The Ellsworth Bearcats placed second Saturday at the Cardinal Winter Jam, suffering a 63-51 loss to top-ranked 1A Division I Otis-Bison.

The Lady ‘Cats placed third, defeating LaCrosse 48-36.

Northern Plains League tournament

LINCOLN — The ninth-ranked 1A Division II Wilson Dragons placed fifth in the tough Northern Plains tournament with a 46-42 win over a good Pike Valley squad in Lincoln.

The Lady Dragons blitzed Lincoln, 52-21, Saturday to win fifth place.

Mid-Winter Classic tournament

ST. JOHN — The Central Plains Oilers placed fourth in the Mid-Winter Classic tournament, suffering a 52-45 loss to 4A Division II Pratt in the third place game.
