County discusses permits for towers

By
Alan Rusch Ellsworth County I-r

Aproposed update of a resolution dealing with freestanding towers 100 feet or more in height in Ellsworth County was the topic of discussion at Monday’s meeting of the Ellsworth County Commission.

County Attorney Paul J. Kasper said the updated resolution, Resolution 2025-R-02, is basically the same as the previous resolution on the matter, except the new resolution triggers the requirement to get a permit prior to the start of construction of a tower.

He noted, for example, if a tower is 100 feet tall, it must be 120 feet away from the county right-ofway.

Once the updated resolution is approved, all new towers going forward must get a permit before construction starts.

Kasper will draft the updated resolution and present it at the Monday, Feb. 10, commission meeting for approval.

In other business:

• Approval was given to a request from Ellsworth Township Trustee Colby Richard to appoint Travis Holt to fill the open Ellsworth Township clerk seat.

• After the commissioners gave their consensus approval, Kasper will draw up a new fiveyear lease between the county and Jake Svaty to continue farming ground at the county landfill. The extended lease will be from March 2025 to March 2030.

Svaty, who was in attendance at Monday’s meeting, wishes to continue the lease.

• After meeting with Ellsworth County Sanitarian Shawn Estrel and reviewing state water grant conditions and LEPP grant applications, commissioners approved applications 9 and 10. They also voted to cease all further LEPP grant applications for 2024 and approved to proceed with 2025 LEPP grant application requests.

• At the request of the Domestic Violence Agency of Central Kansas, a proclamation was signed designating January as National Stalking Awareness Month.

The next meeting of the Ellsworth County Commission will be at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at the county courthouse.
