County hires Thomas as full-time emergency management director

Afamiliar face is returning as director of Ellsworth County Emergency Management.

At Monday’s meeting of the Ellsworth County Commission, Commissioner Shawn Thomas announced that Keith Haberer will begin Sept. 2 as the full-time director of that department.

“Sorry it took longer than we thought,” Thomas said of the selection process.

Ellsworth County had been sharing Haberer as part-time emergency management director with Russell County until Russell County decided it wanted to end that arrangement and have a full-time director of its own.

That was when the Ellsworth County Commissioners decided to begin a search for a full-time director. Thomas said three individuals asked about the job, but only two applied.

In other business:

• After meeting with Theresa Shute, director of the county noxious weed department, landfill and recycling program, along with a representative from Sterling Standard LLC, the commissioners are considering once again allowing e-waste (electronic waste) to be accepted by the county recycling program. Commissioners requested a list of what will and will not be taken and will make a decision from there.

• Kerianne Ehrlich, county health department director, said the health department is planning to conduct a Community Baby Shower from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14. She will have information on WIC, breast feeding and other topics, as well as giveaways.

Ehrlich said the health department has been approved for a .gov email domain and a new server has been installed from LockIt.

She presented a bid to replace the fascia on the outside of the health department building due to water damage, but the commissioners asked her to get another bid for their consideration before a decision is made.

• Approval was given to a $2,590 bid from Advantage Computers, Iola, to replace a computer in the Register of Deeds office. Funds to pay for the computer will be taken from the LATCF grant.

• Approval was given to a $1,935 bid from L&L Auto, Holyrood, to construct an 8 foot by 12 foot metal storage shed at EMS headquarters. Funds to pay for the shed will be taken from the LATCF fund.

The next meeting of the Ellsworth County Commission will be at 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 26, at the county courthouse.
