Errebo charged with second-degree murder
SALINA — Kayla Lynn Errebo, 32, Lorraine, made her initial appearance in Saline County District Court Tuesday morning regarding a fatal traffic collision Aug. 8 in rural Saline County, resulting in a charge of Murder in the 2nd Degree.
The state’s request for a bond of either $1.5 or $2 million was denied. Bail was set at $1 million.
If she makes bail, Errebo can’t leave jail without a monitoring device and a device that measures the presence of alcohol. She is prohibited from operating a motor vehicle and ordered to have no contact with any named victims or witnesses in the case.
The state has filed to revoke Errebo’s probation. Errebo has hired an attorney, but he was not present on Tuesday.
The charges stem from a fatal traffic collision in rural Saline County early the morning of Aug. 8 that left one person dead, one seriously injured and Errebo facing serious criminal charges.
The crash occurred at approximately 5:35 a.m. Aug. 8 near the intersection of South Reese Road and K-140 Highway, according to the Saline County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Saline County Sheriff’s Department, a Chevrolet truck traveling eastbound on K-140 was struck by a Jeep Grand Cherokee that was traveling westbound. The Jeep entered the eastbound lane, causing a head-on collision between the two vehicles.
The driver of the Chevrolet, Mark Sommerfeld, 61, of Brookville, was transported by emergency medical services to Salina Regional Health Center with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. His passenger, Deanna Sommerfeld, 55, also of Brookville, was pronounced dead at the scene. Both victims were properly restrained at the time of the crash according to law enforcement officials.
The alleged driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Kayla Lynn Errebo, 32, Lorraine, was not present when deputies arrived at the scene. She was later located at an address in Ellsworth at approximately 8:26 a.m. Sheriff’s deputies noted Errebo sustained minor injuries which did not require medical treatment.Errebo was taken into custody and booked into the Saline County Jail on multiple charges, including murder in the second degree, failure to report an injury accident, circumvention of ignition interlock device and probation violation.
On Monday, a Complaint/Information was filed in case SA-2025-CR-000497 in Saline Country District Court as State of Kansas v. Kayla Lynn Errebo, listing the following charges: Count 1 — Murder in the 2nd Degree, a severity level 2 person felony; Count 2 — Aggravated Battery, a severity level 5 person felony; Count 3 — Violation of Duty of Driver upon Damaging an Unintended Vehicle or Other Property, a class C nonperson misdemeanor; Count 4 — Reckless Driving, first offense, an unclassified misdemeanor; Count 5 — Circumvention of Ignition Interlock Device, a class A nonperson misdemeanor; and Count 6 — Improper Driving on a Laned Roadway, an infraction.
Additionally, according to Saline County District Court records, a motion to revoke probation was filed on Aug. 11 in Saline County District Court cases 2024-CR-000450 and 2024-TR-000226. Both of those cases involved driving under the influence of alcohol.
In January 2024, Errebo was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs as well as for tampering with an ignition interlock device. Later, on June 27, 2024, she was arrested again for driving under the influence, fleeing from an officer, driving without a valid license, and operating a vehicle without the required ignition interlock device. She pleaded guilty to these charges in October 2024 and was sentenced to one year of probation, which was set to end November 2025.
The Saline County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the incident and encourages anyone with information to contact their office at (785) 826-6500.
“Further updates will be provided as they become available,” Operations Captain Jim Hughes said in a statement released Friday.
As of press time on Aug. 12 she was still in custody in Saline County.
Errebo’s preliminary hearing is set for 1:30 p.m. Aug. 22 in Courtroom 301 at the Saline County Courthouse.
