Errebo hearing postponed to March
SALINA — The two-day preliminary hearing, previously scheduled for Jan. 5 and 6 for Kayla Errebo, 32, Lorraine, has been rescheduled for 9 a.m. March 10 in Room 301 of the City of Salina/ Saline County Building, 300 W. Ash St., before Judge Amy Norton.
Errebo is charged with second-degree murder, as well as additional charges, in connection with a fatal crash that took place Aug. 8 in Saline County.
The date change was the result of a motion for continuance filed Nov. 26 by Errebo’s attorney, Michael S. Holland II of Holland and Holland, Russell. It was granted Dec. 15.
The reason for the motion was stated as follows: “Defense counsel was informed that the accident reconstruction, which is of paramount importance, will not be complete for almost another month. With the holidays and the timing of the preliminary hearing, this does not leave the defendant with enough time to retain an expert to review the report and issue their own findings. The State does not object and agrees with the importance of the accident reconstruction report.”
According to Saline County Sheriff ’s reports, just before 5:30 a.m.
Aug. 8, a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Errebo was westbound on Kansas 140 at South Reese Road in rural Saline County. The Jeep entered the eastbound lane and struck a Chevrolet truck driven by 61-year-old Mark Sommerfeld, Brookville, head-on.
A passenger in the Chevy, Deanna Sommerfeld, 55, Brookville, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Errebo was not at the scene of the crash.
Deputies located her just before 8:30 a.m. at an address in Ellsworth.
She had minor injuries that did not require medical treatment.
Errebo was taken into custody and booked into the Saline County Jail on multiple charges, including murder in the second degree, failure to report an injury accident, circumvention of an ignition interlock device and a probation violation.
On Aug. 11, a Complaint/Information was filed in case SA-2025-CR-000497 in Saline Country District Court as State of Kansas vs. Kayla Lynn Errebo listing the following charges: Count one — Murder in the Second Degree, a severity level 2 person felony; Count two — Aggravated Battery, a severity level 5 person felony; Count three — Violation of Duty of Driver upon Damaging Unintended Vehicle or Other Property, Class C nonperson misdemeanor; Count 4 — Reckless Driving, first offense, unclassified misdemeanor; Count 5 — Circumvention of Ignition Interlock Device, Class A non-person misdemeanor; and Count 6 — Improper Driving on a Laned Roadway, an infraction.
