Trap shooting event coming to Fort Harker Days
KANOPOLIS — At the June 11 meeting of the Kanopolis City Council, approval was given to a request by Tim Hays of the 4-H Club to host a trap shooting event during Fort Harker Days. It will be held in a stock trailer that has been converted to a shooting sports trailer. The club will provide insurance to cover the event. The council suggested it be conducted between 1-3 p.m. so as not to conflict with other events. It will be located on Kansas Street in front of the park.
In other business:
• Tomasa Cisneros asked the council if the time for memorials at the cemetery could be extended. She said they take care of their own graves and would like longer time. Maintenance Supervisor Mike Bunch said if they maintain the gravesites, they can take as much time as they want and that it only becomes an issue when the city crew has to mow. Cisneros also asked if pictures could be displayed in the city hall and possibly the newsletter. The council said that could happen.
• Mayor Anthony Hopkins said not much has changed with the water project. He did reach out to Topeka, but believes most of the funding for this year has been used. He would like to table the water project until something changes.
• Bunch said the city crew is making progress at the bathrooms in the city park. They are currently working on the inside plumbing.
Bunch said they have started to replace the ceiling tiles at the community center, but it is a huge mess. The council requested the work be completed before the next rental, which is Fort Harker Days.
• The Drinking Water Protection Program paid $3,330 to Jeremy Kootz for planting two new cover crops.
• City Clerk Debbie Kralik said she had several quotes on new phone lines and internet service. After a brief discussion, the council tabled the matter so more options can be found.
• Diane Vanek has decided she no longer wants to maintain the flowers in the Kanopolis Library sign. Hopkins said to put in the newsletter and ask for a volunteer. Kralik suggested maybe the new librarian could maintain it. She will ask the librarian.
• Bunch said the city crew will soon start working on the flushing valve at the corner of Montana and B streets. He suggested that when the new water tower gets built, the pipes will get replaced with larger pipes and a fire hydrant will be installed.
• Council Member Brian Pruitt let the council know he will be resigning his council seat at the end of the month. Pruitt said he was approached by Levi Schneider as a possible replacement.
• Hopkins said South Central Sealing was running behind and will probably not get the streets done until mid-July.
• Approval was given to waive the licensing fees for side-by-sides for Fort Harker Days.
• Approval was given to a request by the Kanopolis Recreation Department for $500 for Fort Harker Days. The funds will be taken out of the general fund.
• Hopkins asked Kralik to send out mowing letters.
• Approval was given to pay the bills.
The next meeting of the Kanopolis City Council will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, at city hall.
