VFW, Legion assume duties of veteran banners
The majestic and proudly displayed veterans banners which fly in downtown Ellsworth on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day will continue as Grow Ellsworth County, the City of Ellsworth, the Ellsworth American Legion Post 174 and the Ellsworth County VFW partner together to transition the program into the future.
The banners, originally sold through the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce, were a three-year program intended to honor the dedicated service of area veterans. It will continue as an effort led by the VFW and American Legion effective Dec. 1.
Banners that have served their three-year service downtown will be retired and can be picked up from the Grow Ellsworth County office from Dec. 1-31.
Patrons wishing to replace their retired banner for another three years or order a new banner can contact Alan Byerley at (785) 531-0409. There are restrictions on banner deadlines and digital photos, so the public is encouraged to communicate early with Byerley to obtain full details.
“Grow Ellsworth County is pleased to secure a partner in this program that can honor their mission and continue to beautify our downtown through the veterans banners,” GEC Executive Director Stacie Schmidt said.
The City of Ellsworth’s partnership in this program continues as their staff hangs and stores the banners to preserve their longevity through the three-year program.
“As the American Legion Commander, I am super excited that we get the opportunity to continue this service to our community,” Melissa Taylor said. “It is a great way to show respect to the amazing veterans of Ellsworth. It’s a team effort with the VFW Post 6485 and the City of Ellsworth and we are looking forward to the future of this program.”
