Boys win invitational at Minneapolis, girls place 5 in top 4

MINNEAPOLIS — The Ellsworth wrestlers traveled to Minneapolis Dec. 13 to take part in the Jeff Giles Invitational. In team standings, Ellsworth placed sixth out of the 13-team field.

The boys’ team won the invitational as a team, beating out second place finisher Salina South by 10 points. Additionally, three wrestlers won their respective varsity brackets while placing three other wrestlers in the top four.

Winning their varsity brackets were Rett Bohl (132 lbs., 3-0), Keegan Urbanek (190 lbs., 4-0) and Micah Galvan (215 lbs., 4-0).

Earning second and fourth place finishes were Walter Hulse (126 lbs., 4-1, second), Ismael De La Cruz (113 lbs., 1-3, fourth) and Octavio Rodriguez (120 lbs., 2-3, fourth).

Other wrestlers competing were Jayden Nagel (165 lbs., 2-2, seventh), Kaine Rush (138 lbs., 1-2), Jackson Minear (144 lbs., 3-2) and Tucker Holt (150 lbs., 1-2).

Individually, the girls placed five wrestlers in the top four in their respective brackets, with Sophie Homolka taking home top honors as she won the 145-lb. bracket, going 4-0 on the day.

Homolka started the day off defeating Elizabeth Shaw of Southeast of Saline, followed by wins over Jayla Dunivin of Chanute, Rosalyn Riley of Salina South and Lyla Richards of Ellsworth.

Kit Donley and Brooklyn Webb brought home second place finishes in the 120-lb. and 130lb. brackets, respectively, with Donley going 4-1 on the day, while Webb went 2-1.

Ending the tournament with fourth place finishes were Kiya Schultz (110 lbs., 2-3) and Dannie Miley (140 lbs., 1-3).

Other wrestlers included Hadleigh Hicks (135 lbs., 3-2, seventh), Khloe Kinsley (105 lbs., 0-4, ninth), Adrianna Neuman (125 lbs., 1-2) and Korbyn Jensen (125 lbs., 0-2).

The girls will travel to Larned Jan. 8, while the boys will have their first meet of the new calendar year Jan. 10 at their own Ellsworth Invitational.
