Girls qualify 4 for state wrestling
WAKEENEY — The Ellsworth girls’ wrestling team competed in the KSHSAA Class 3-2-1A Regionals Tournament Feb. 13-14, qualifying four wrestlers to advance to the state championships Feb. 27-28. Qualifiers are juniors Sophie Homolka and Brooklyn Webb, sophomore Kiya Schultz and freshman Kit Donley.
Homolka, the top finisher for the Bearcats, earned a second-place finish in the 145-lb. bracket. Going 3-1 in the tournament, Homolka defeated Marley Smith of Minneapolis, Jemma Thomas of Phillipsburg and Jacqalyn Parde of Republic County, before falling to Kinsy Zorn of Russell in the final match.
Placing fourth in the 130-lb. bracket was Webb, as she went 4-2. Sandwiching her four wins between the two losses, Webb started the tournament by falling to Cashlyn Donohue of St. Francis, then defeated Shayden Selzer of Oakley, Ana Schempler of Phillipsburg and June Finnesy of Plainville, before falling to Maggie Holle of Rawlins County.
Donley placed sixth in the 120-lb. bracket, going 3-3. Donley won her first match over Adelaide Rummel of Plainville before losing her second match to Arianna Weigel of Russell. Donley then won her next two matches over Valeria Hernandez of Phillipsburg and Ava Thurman of Republic County before falling to Kylee Hodges of Oakley and Addison Morgan of Sterling.
Placing eighth in the 120-lb. bracket, Schultz went 2-3 in the tournament, starting out with a defeat of Lexi Zolinski of Oakley before falling to Saj Snyder of Stockton. She then won her third match by defeating Makiya Louthan of Chapparal before closing out with two losses to Emily Smee of Hill City and Aaleyah Becker of Plainville.
The four wrestlers will compete at the KSHSAA Classes 3-2-1A State Championship Tournament Feb. 27-28 at Fort Hays State University.
Wrestlers competing but not qualifying were sophomores Dannie Miley and Hadley Hicks and freshman Adrianna Neuman.
