Girls wrestling takes 10th at Hays
HAYS — The Ellsworth High School girls’ wrestling team competed in the Girls’ Prairie Classic Jan. 17. The Bearcats claimed 10th place in team standings that featured 21 teams, most of which were 4A, 5A and 6A schools. Ellsworth scored 63.5 team points, just 6 points behind ninth-place finisher Pratt. The girls placed three wrestlers in the top five in their respective divisions, with junior Brooklyn Webb leading the way and placing second in the 130-lb. division.
Webb was followed by 145-lb. junior Sophie Homolka, who placed third in her division, while freshman Kit Donley placed fifth in the 120-lb. division.
Webb, going 2-1 on the day, defeated June Finnesy of Plainville and Charlotte Garrity of Norton before succumbing to Reese Veehige of Hays in her final match.
Homolka won her first match by defeating Jemma Thomas of Phillipsburg, then fell to Timber Lovewell of Hays before winning her final two matches over Brylee Richardson of Pratt and Laura Smith of Oakley.
Donley started by winning her first two matches over Adelaide Rummet of Plainville and Blakelyn Reidel of Pratt, before losing her next two to Josie Bell of Hoxie and Lilliona Martinez of Junction City, then winning her final match in a rematch against Reidel.
Also gaining wins on the day were sophomore Kiya Schultz (2-2) and freshman Adrianna Neuman (1-2).
The team will host Southeast of Saline Jan. 22 for Senior Night, then travel to Council Grove Jan. 24.
